This Department is concerned primarily with the provision and management of housing for those citizens of Limerick City in need of quality affordable accommodation. Such accommodation is provided through a number of different means:
Direct Provision by:
- Limerick City Council of new housing units
- Voluntary Sector of new housing units but supported by Limerick City Council
- Limerick City Council of new Affordable Private housing units
- Limerick City Council through the Extensions in Lieu of Rehousing Scheme
- Limerick City Council through the Improvement Works In Lieu of Rehousing Scheme
- Limerick City Council through the Improvement Works In Lieu of Rehousing Scheme
Assistance through:
- House Purchase Loans
- Shared Ownership Transactions
- Disabled Persons Grants
Management of Housing Units
Limerick City Council owns 3048 housing units in Limerick City .The age of the stock varies from one to seventy five years and the City Council has recently approved a planned maintenance programme involving the replacement of windows and doors for 1921 units over 5 years from 2001 to 2006.The City Council is committed to principles of good estate management and in 1999 adopted a City Wide Strategy in partnership with the Community Sector. A number of new initiatives have been undertaken since the adoption of this strategy including the employment of an additional community liaison official and the funding of eight Estate Management groups in the City.
