Library Ireland Week 2009


Exhibition to promote Fairtrade Fortnight

An exhibition to promote Fairtrade Fortnight takes place in the Granary Library from Monday 23rd February to Saturday 7th March 2009. An official launch by the Mayor, Cllr. John Gilligan, together with a speaker on behalf of Fairtrade will take place on Wednesday 4th March 2009, at 2.15pm.

Architecture Exhibition

From Thursday 26th February to Friday 13th March there will bean exhibition of architectural work in the Granary Library. The exhibits are the work of Architecture students from the University of Limerick. The exhibition will be launched by the Mayor, Cllr. John Gilligan on Thursday 26th February at 4.00pm. All are welcome.

Author Visit in Watch House Cross Library – Roisin Meaney Limerick based author

Roisin Meaney will visit Watch House Cross Library on Thursday 5th March 2009 at 6.30pm We are delighted to announce that Roisin Meaney will be visiting Watch House Cross Library on World Book Day. Roisin is a very popular local based author who writes for both adults and children. Roisin will read from her latest novel for adults called, “Half Seven on a Thursday”, which will be published in April. Admission is free and all are welcome.

2009 Literary Quizword

To celebrate Library Ireland Week (2nd - 7th March) the City Library invites you to participate in our Literary Quizword. To take part all you need to do is pick up and entry form in either the Granary or Roxboro branches or download it from the events section of the website. Complete the quizword, fill in your contact details & hand your entry in at the library desk. The closing date for entries is Saturday 28th February.

Aontas Adult Learner's Festival 2009

Aontas, the National Adult Learning Organisation, is holding a week long series of events to celebrate adult learning in communities, education centres, libraries and the workplace. As part of this nationwide festival, Limerick City Library will hold computer classes for adults. The course is for absolute beginners and will be held on Thursday 5th & Friday 6th February in the Granary. Booking is essential as places are limited. On Tuesday 10th February staff member, Fiona Ismail will give a talk on using digital cameras. The talk is aimed at people with little or no experience of using digital cameras, and will provide simple hints and tips on getting the best from your digital camera.

On Wednesday 11th February at 11.00am Eva Hill will give a talk on Nutritional Therapy. Eva is a member of the Irish Association of Nutritional Therapists and will present a talk on how nutritional therapy can promote health and energy. She will also tak about detoxification and successful permanent weightloss without harming your health. Admission to the talk is free and all are welcome.

Wood of Life Exhibition

Limerick City Library is pleased to announce details of the 'Wood of Life' exhibition, which will take place in the Granary throughout November 2008. It is a travelling, hands-on, interactive exhibition, which aims to raise awareness of sustainable development. The exhibition is suitable for pupils from 5th and 6th class, in primary schools and students in the Junior Cert and Leaving Cert cycles. 'Living in the City' & German Re-unification Day

Celebrated author, Hugo Hamilton will visit Limerick City Library on Friday 3rd October 2008. As part of the 'Living in the City' series of events and to celebrate German Re-unification Day, Hugo Hamilton will be giving a reading from his work. There will also be talks by Dr. joachim Fischer and Dr. Gisela Holfter, Centre for Irish-German Studies, UL. The event takes place from 12.30pm-2.00pm on Friday 3rd October in the Granary. Samples of German food will also be available for tasting. Admission is free & all are welcome

RTE Weather Photographic Exhibition

An exhibition of the entries / winners from the RTE Weather Photographic Competition will take place in the Granary from 17th to 26th June 2008. Admission is free & all are welcome.

Lunchtime Play in the Granary - Wednesday May 7th

In the Granary, on Wednesday 7th May, at 1.00p.m. there will be a performance of a one act play by Eugene O’Neill called “Hughie”. The play is set in the summer of 1928, very late at night in the lobby of a once respectable second rate hotel, in midtown Manhattan. It stars Ber Power as ‘Erie’ Smith and Liam Bland as Charlie Hughes, the night clerk. The play is directed by Ber Power who has been associated with  Cork theatre and particularly the Everyman Playhouse since its foundation in the sixties. The duration of the play is one hour.

Admission is Free & All are welcome

Estonia/ Ireland – Press Photo Exhibition March 2008

The exhibition was launched by the Estonian ambassador on Tuesday 4th March 2008 and will run for two weeks in the Granary Branch - admission is free and all are welcome.

The exhibition celebrates the 90th Anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Estonia and is organised by the Union of Estonian Journalists. It features the best photographs published by the Estonian media during 2006, including photographs from important events such as the funeral of former President Lennart Meri, sporting events and the environment. It also includes a number of photographs from the Limerick Leader.


Library Ireland Week 2008

This year Library Ireland Week will run from Monday 3rd to Saturday 8th March. The official launch for the Limerick area will take place in the Limerick Institute of Technology on Monday 3rd. In addition to the other events mentioned in this section there will be:

  • Word searches and colouring for children throughout the week
  • SEI Sustainable Energy Workshops for schools (contact Margaret Griffin, 061 407510 for further details).
  • The Gramophone Circle will meet on Monday 3rd March at 11am in the Music Library, the Granary. Admission is free and all are welcome.
  • On Thursday 6th March we will be announcing the winners of the Literary Quizword.
  • The 5th & 6th Class Primary Schools Quiz will take place on Tuesday 11th March (contact Margaret Griffin, 061 407510 for further details).

Launch of Fairtrade Fortnight 2008

The launch of Fairtrade Fortnight will take place at 11.15am on Friday 29th February in the Granary. Guests will include Armando Choco, from Belize, who works with the Toledo Cacao Growers Association & Dolores O’Meara, Chairperson of the Limerick Fairtrade Committee.


Engineered! A Week of Wonder

On Tuesday 12th February the library will be participating in ‘Engineered! A Week of Wonder, co-ordinated by Engineers Ireland STEPS to engineering programme, by hosting a series of events throughout the day at the Granary Library for children & their parents who are taking part in treasure hunts around the City.

Watch House Cross Community Library Opens

The new, state of the art branch library at Watch House Cross was officially opened on Thursday 31st May 2007 by Mayor, Cllr. Joe Leddin and opened to the public from Tuesday 5th June.  This new branch library will serve the north side of Limerick City, especially the communities of Moyross, Ballynanty and Kileely.

As of November 2007 membership of the library was approaching 3,000!

Bealtaine Festival 2009

This is the national arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. The theme this year is 'Go & Open the Door' and is an invitation for people to try something new! As part of Bealtaine we have organised an interesting program of events, which you can see below.
